大小いくつかの島から成る東南アジアの国フィリピンは、太平洋プレートの端に位置し、その地帯は歴史的に地震が多く発生してきたことで知られます。
特に、首都マニラは地震による大きな災害被害が懸念される地域で、その一つとして環太平洋火山帯があるため、大地震の際には火山噴火が引き起こされる可能性があることが挙げられます。
さらにもう一つ、マニラの土壌は柔らかいため、大地震が起きた場合に液状化が起きてしまう可能性もあります。
ちなみに、近年、フィリピンで起こった地震の一例として、2013年10月15日に起きたマグニチュード7.1の地震があります。
フィリピンの国家災害リスク軽減管理評議会（NDRRMC）の公式発表によれば、この地震による死者は222人、行方不明者は8人、負傷者は976人でした。
また、7万3千以上の建造物が損壊し、そのうち1万4500以上が全壊したとされます。
さらに、2017年4月8日には、単発での規模は小さいものの、マグニチュード5の地震が30分の間に3回連続してマニラ付近で起こるなどしています。

On October 15, 2013, an earthquake of magnitude 7.1 Richter scale had struck central Philippines. According to official reports by the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC), 222 were reported dead, 8 were missing, and 976 people were injured. In all, more than 73,000 structures were damaged, of which more than 14,500 were totally destroyed. It was the deadliest earthquake in the Philippines in 23 years. The energy released by the quake was equivalent to 32 Hiroshima bombs.
